MusPG Cert /PG Diploma/ MA in Education: Early Childhood Music

This programme is the first PG Cert/PG Diploma /MA in the UK to offer students the opportunity to specialise in early childhood music.
The course will be run in partnership with the Centre for Research in Early Childhood (CREC) Birmingham and Birmingham City University. Students will be able to take a pathway specialising in early years music or to include an early childhood music research module as part of a broader early childhood focused MA programme.
The programme is designed to suit distance learning. Stage 1 and 2 modules consist of 7 individual study days across the academic year combined with one-to-one tutor support. The course dates are as follows: 17th & 18th September, 11th October, 29th November, 9th December 2010, 18th January and 8th February 2011. CREC is located in central Birmingham within walking distance of the mainline station.
Students can complete Stage 1 to gain a Post Graduate Certificate in Education, complete Stage 1 and 2 Modules to gain a Post Graduate Diploma in Education or complete Stage 1 and 2 Modules with a Stage 3 Dissertation to gain a Masters Degree.
Who is it for?
The programme is for anyone who is already working in early years music, or who plans to in the future, in a range of professional capacities: independent workshop leaders, early years educators, music therapists, advisors, community musicians, instrumental teachers.
A first degree is normally required for entry to this programme but concessions may be made for students who have other relevant qualifications and/or relevant experience.
What would it cover?
The programme aims to cover all aspects of music in early childhood and to give students an introduction to research which will enable them to carry out research in to aspects of practice.
The music content will be led by Dr Susan Young, Associate Senior Researcher of CREC and Senior Lecturer at Exeter University – a leading international expert in early years music education. CREC has a long-established reputation as a centre of excellence in early years practice and this programme will take advantage of the expertise and experience of its two professors of early years education, Professor Chris Pascal and Professor Tony Bertram.
